Dec, 2005 - Policy Change: Spam Prevention - Realtime Blackhole Lists

After successfully tested on one server, this now is installed on all US and UK servers, maybe German DC will get it later.

Due to the recent and ongoing increase in spam email, we have taken the decision to use Realtime Blackhole Lists to check all incoming email to our servers. A Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) is a list of open mail relays and rogue sites which are commonly reported for sending out large quantities spam email. Subscribers to the RBL reject all mail connection attempts from listed IP addresses, effectively cutting off irresponsible or incompetent domains from the rest of the Internet.

For us, this means that when someone sends us an email, their mailserver IP address will be checked against various 'complaint lists', and if it matches the email will automatically be rejected by our server. The sender will receive a notification explaining why they have been rejected, and a link to the RBL that is blocking them.

This should greatly reduce the amount of spam we are all receiving. However, it does mean that there may be occasions when a genuine and non-spam email is rejected by our server. Although this is the sending mailserver admins responsibility to have their IP addresses removed at the RBL, there are things we can do to help. These are:

Exclude your domains from RBL checking
If you would prefer to exclude your domain(s) from these RBL checks, please contact Support with a full list of domain names, and we can add them to a 'bypass list'. This will ensure that any incoming email to these specified domains will only go through the regular local filtering you have set up in cPanel (Mail filters / SpamAssassin / Boxtrapper / etc). Please note that the default RBL setting is that ALL domains on our servers are checked unless specifically excluded.

Whitelist an external mailserver If an external email is being blocked, we can look into the possibility of whitelisting it. Of course the better option is for the sender to have their IP address removed from the RBL, but we understand that this is not always within their control. Simply send us full details of the rejected email and we will consider whitelisting their mailserver.

The RBLs we are currently using are as follows:
  • - dnsbl.njabl.org
  • - bl.spamcop.net
  • - sbl.spamhaus.org
  • - list.dsbl.org
  • - cbl.abuseat.org
  • - relays.ordb.org
Any email sent to abuse@ or postmaster@ will bypass the RBL check - this is so that reports can be sent to you. (Please check that you have set both as valid email, this is required by RFC)

We have previously taken the stance that all filtering should be carried out at a local level with the various tools provided - however we recognise that the problem is becoming so severe that more pro-active action is necessary.

Best,
Support@1steuro.net
